The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty. But above all, our impact on the society is the real indicator of everlasting success.
we share with you one such story of success - a success made possible by countless men and women who have formed the core of Rotary Club of Mangalore North over the past 50 years. This is our story - a story spanning half a century of service, half a century of commitment and half a century of memories.
Rotary Club of Mangalore North was inaugurated on the New Year day of 1969. The charter, admitting our club as a member of rotary international was presented on 21-1-1969. Our club began with 34 members who showed keen interest in the ideals of rotary from the very beginning.
In the first 10 years, Rotary Club of Mangalore North initiated numerous community service projects that have served as an inspiration for community service projects for the ensuing 40 years. Noteworthy among them are:
- Rotary Children’s Library
- The Specs Bank
- Rotary Maternity and child welfare centre
- Rotary free dispensary and paediatric centre
- classes on first aid and home safety
- classrooms to kodical village primary school for harijan children
- drinking water facility to Besant women’s college
- adult education welfare
This period also saw the launch of our club’s newsletter - The Rotanore
For the first 10 years, the weekly meetings would be conducted at Moti Mahal Hotel and later at the Hindi Prachar Samiti. All through this time, a burning desire illuminated the hearts of our then members - a desire to have a place we can call our own. Through the efforts of Shri Manel Krishna Nayak and other influential members of our club this desire came to life in the form of Rotary Bal Bhavan. This edifice, inaugurated in 1981, has served as our club’s headquarters ever since.
Parallel to the desire of having our own headquarters, the then members also developed a desire to share the ideals of rotary with others and this led to the establishment of rotary club of belthangady in 1972 and rotary club of port town in 1977.
The first ten years also saw a flurry of activities on the youth front with the inauguration of interact clubs at KV panambur in 1974, Canara Urwa in 1975 and Besant Girl’s High school in 1978 along with Rotaract Clubs of Govinda Dasa College Surathkal in 1971 and a women’s only Rotaract Club in Besant Women’s College in 1978.
In the 40 years that followed, we have been a busy club. All together, in the past fifty years, our club has contributed $86,095 to Rotary International and have received grants to the value of $600,000 which have been effectively used by our club to conceptualise, organise and implement projects that have had a tremendous impact on the society and the world in general.

Over the past 50 years, our club has initiated multiple polio camps as part of our efforts to sponsor and volunteer on international projects.
